How to Choose the Right Aluminum Extrusion Press for Your Plant
Why Choosing the Right Aluminum Extrusion Press Matters
An aluminum extrusion press is the core machine that turns heated aluminum billets into profiles for construction, rail transit, automotive, and aviation parts. Pick the wrong tonnage or configuration and you waste capital, throttle output, or cannot make the profiles your customers need. This guide walks plant owners and procurement managers through the real specifications so you can shortlist the correct model before requesting a quote.

1. Define Your Profile and Output First
Before reading any spec sheet, answer three questions:
What alloys and profile shapes will you run (solid bars, hollow tubes, thin-wall sections)?
What is your target billet size and daily output in tons?
Will you also process copper or other alloys later?
The answers decide your required clamping force and whether you need a double-action (piercing) cylinder. Our Aluminum Extrusion Press range covers small workshops up to full industrial lines, all built on the same JY platform we also use for our Copper Extrusion Press.
2. Read the Specifications That Actually Matter
The model number in our JY series equals the nominal tonnage. Below is the real production lineup. Rated extrusion force runs from 6,300 KN (630 ton) to 25,000 KN (2,500 ton), all at a stable 21 MPa working pressure.
| Model | Rated Extrusion Force (KN) | Fixed Work Stress (MPa) | Locking Force (KN) | Perforation Force (KN) | Extruding Speed (mm/s) | Main Motor Power (KW) | Barrel Inner Hole (mm) | Host Dimensions (L x W x H, m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JY-630 | 6300 | 21 | 633 | 1030 | 40 | 75 KW x3 | Dia. 85-115 x 500 | 6.8 x 2.3 x 2.8 |
| JY-800 | 8000 | 21 | 633 | 1030 | 50 | 132 KW x3 | Dia. 105-135 x 550 | 9.2 x 2.3 x 3.1 |
| JY-1000 | 10000 | 21 | 800 | 1293 | 40 | 132 KW x3 | Dia. 125-135 x 600 | 10 x 2.4 x 3.3 |
| JY-1250 | 12500 | 21 | 800 | 1293 | 50 | 132 KW x4 | Dia. 135-165 x 650 | 11.5 x 2.5 x 3.4 |
| JY-1630 | 16300 | 21 | 1586 | 2500 | 40 | 132 KW x5 | Dia. 155-205 x 750 | 13.5 x 4.2 x 4.1 |
| JY-1800 | 18000 | 21 | 1586 | 2800 | 40 | 132 KW x6 | Dia. 175-225 x 800 | 14.5 x 4.2 x 4.1 |
| JY-2200 | 22000 | 21 | 1586 | 3000 | 40 | 132 KW x7 | Dia. 195-245 x 900 | 15.5 x 4.7 x 4.5 |
| JY-2500 | 25000 | 21 | 1586 | 3500 | 40 | 132 KW x8 | Dia. 205-265 x 1000 | 18 x 5 x 4.8 |
How to use this table:
Rated extrusion force sets the maximum billet and profile size. A 630-ton press suits small sections; a 2,500-ton press handles large industrial profiles.
Barrel inner hole (Dia. 85-265 mm) tells you the billet diameter range the container accepts.
Main motor power (75 KW x3 up to 132 KW x8) indicates energy draw and cycle speed; more motors mean faster, heavier cycles.
Extruding speed of 40-50 mm/s is the practical ram speed that affects hourly output.

3. Single-Action vs Double-Action Extrusion
Our presses support both processes:
Single-action (fixed needle): best for solid profiles and rods.
Double-action (following needle / piercing): required for hollow profiles such as tubes and pipes, using the perforation force shown in the table (1,030-3,500 KN).
The four-column horizontal structure with a top-mounted oil tank keeps the machine compact and easy to assemble. The hydraulic system uses a large-flow plug valve for stable performance and low temperature rise, while PLC control with a man-machine interface gives real-time monitoring on the shop floor.
4. Aluminum Press vs Copper Press: Same Reliable Platform
If you plan to process both metals, note that our aluminum and copper presses share the same JY series and core engineering. The difference is in tooling and process parameters tuned per alloy. We offer a dedicated Copper Extrusion Press so you get the right container, needle, and cooling setup rather than a compromise conversion. Component brands are consistent across both: Mitsubishi touch screen, Schneider electrical appliances, and Rexroth pumps.
5. Why Buyers Choose J&Y Extrusion Presses

Dalian Jiuying Heavy Machine (brand J&Y) has built extrusion equipment since 2015 and serves markets including the US, Italy, and Russia. Buyers choose us for reasons that directly reduce their risk:
Certified quality: presses are manufactured under an ISO 9001 quality system and supported by CE documentation and factory test certificates. Every unit is trial-run and recorded on video before shipment.
Free plant layout: we provide plant construction plans and layout drawings one-to-one, sent directly to your mailbox, so your investment is clear before you buy.
Warranty and support: one-year guarantee, free insurance, and remote or on-site operator training by our specialists.
Customization: color, size, and logo can be adapted to your plant.
A complete line also needs melting and heat treatment. See our Aluminum Melting Furnace and Aluminum Induction Melting Furnace to plan the full process flow.

6. Frequently Asked Questions
What tonnage aluminum extrusion press do I need?
It depends on your billet diameter and the largest profile cross-section you will extrude. Small workshops typically start at JY-630 (630 ton), while large industrial lines use JY-1630 up to JY-2500. Send us your profile drawings and we will recommend the exact model.
Should I choose single-action or double-action?
Choose double-action if you make hollow profiles such as tubes or pipes, because it uses the piercing (perforation) cylinder. Choose single-action for solid bars and rods. Our machines support both following-needle and fixed-needle processes.
Can one press handle both aluminum and copper?
Different alloys need different tooling, container sizes, and cooling. We recommend a dedicated aluminum press and a dedicated copper press, both built on the same reliable JY platform, rather than a single converted machine.
What certifications do J&Y presses have?
Our presses are built under ISO 9001 quality management, supplied with CE documentation and factory test certificates, and each unit is trial-tested with a machine video before delivery.
Do you provide plant layout and installation support?
Yes. We offer a free plant construction plan and layout drawing sent to your mailbox, plus remote guidance or on-site training. All products include a one-year warranty.
